A fridge is an essential home appliance these days, but do you know how it all began in America? Since the first fridge was made way back in 1857, the American refrigerator has surely come a long way to become the sleek machine you have at home!
Back then, the awkwardly large refrigerating device was not fit for home use and took space as much as a king size bed would. Other severe drawbacks included the loud noise they used to make, the technology in itself was far from perfection and it was extremely expensive for common people.
In those days the use of a refrigerator was more for commercial purpose. It served the purpose of preserving food by commercial outlets before selling them. In the year 1920 the 1st compact fridge was introduced. Soon in a span of five years it gained popularity amongst fellow Americans.
The first bulk production was carried out by General Electric, the model of which was based on a sulfur dioxide cooling system. A million refrigerators produced by General Electric then, gave people the power to preserve food in their own homes!
The 1920′s, antiques may still be found at some of the American homes but those are not in manufactured anymore. Those GE refrigerators were the first ones to win the hearts and were accepted as a home appliance worth buying and not to mention were more affordable too.
By the late 30′s over 60% of American households had a fridge at home, and this gave rise to newer designs for greater efficiency and good looks. In and after the 50′s the separate deep-freeze compartment came into being and was an instant hit.
Today, we have the ideal combination of smooth style and high tech sensor features in our refrigerating machines. Technologies have made these devices intelligent and homely, more so they are decorating kitchens with their different styles and aura.
In times to come, you never know we may see a refrigerator with precision cooling where after sensing the different types and characteristics of the food.
